Lessons from
the Trails Blog
Where life, business, and the in-between moments come together
Some of the most important lessons I’ve learned didn’t happen behind a screen…
they happened in the middle of real life.
On the trail.
In the messy middle.
In moments I didn’t plan—but couldn’t ignore.
This blog is a collection of those moments.
Each post starts with a simple question—
and turns into a story, a shift, and a lesson you can carry into your life and business.
Because building a business isn’t just about doing more.
It’s about seeing differently.
And sometimes… the clarity you’re looking for
is found off the beaten path.
What You’ve Been Hiding Might Be the Thing That Builds Trust
For so many business owners, storytelling feels risky.
They’re scared of putting themselves out there.
Scared of oversharing.
Scared of trauma dumping.
Scared of saying too much… or saying the wrong thing.
So instead, they strip their content of the very thing that creates connection.
They sanitize it.
They post generic tips.
Polished advice.
Safe content.
And then they wonder why no one responds.
If You Don’t Set the Standard, Clients Will
I once heard a high-ranking real estate leader say something that stuck with me.
She and her husband had sold more real estate than almost anyone else in the state in 2025. Something like 98 percent more than the average agent.
During her keynote she said something simple but powerful.
If you don’t share a stat, the industry defines you as average.
That idea applies to business in more places than we realize.
If you don’t define the standard, people assume the default.
We’ve Mastered the Thick Stroke
Women are taught to push.
Push in business.
Push in motherhood.
Push through exhaustion.
Push through doubt.
Push through the invisible labor no one else sees.
Push harder.
Push longer.
Push until the job is done.
We have mastered the thick stroke in life.
But nobody ever taught us the thin one.
And when your entire life becomes pressure, eventually the paper tears.
The Decision I Delayed in My Business: Trusting Myself
When I first started my business, I thought my biggest problem was confidence.
I had ideas. I loved creating. I loved helping people. But I didn’t trust myself to make the right decisions.
Small Steps Create Big Shifts: How Simplifying Can Unlock Momentum
At the start of 2026, I realized something important. Growth does not always come from doing more. Sometimes it comes from doing less but with focus and intention.
The previous year had been incredibly intense.
We moved twice.
We navigated complicated family dynamics.
My mother fell, broke her pelvis, and passed away just six days later.
And through it all, we faced major financial challenges.
It was not a year of mistakes.
From Intention to Action: The Decision That Finally Got Me Moving
If I’m being honest, I’ve always been really good at generating ideas.
Give me a notebook and an hour and I can map out strategies, content themes, marketing plans, and business concepts faster than most people can keep up.
Ideas have never been my problem.
Execution… that’s a different story.
Make Room for Growth
There’s a moment many women experience that rarely gets talked about out loud.
From the outside, everything looks fine.
Life works.
The system works.
The arrangement works.
But deep down, you know something isn’t quite right anymore.
You’ve outgrown the space you’re in.
The Part of My Story I Almost Kept Hidden: How My Business Would Look Different If I Had
The Question That Broke Me Open
The first coach I ever had asked me one question that I still think about:
“Who is Kelly?”
I laughed nervously.
“Well… I’m a teacher. I’m a mom. I’m in theater. I do Scouts.”
She didn’t laugh.
“All of those things describe what you do. They don’t tell me who you are. And if you don’t let people in, you’ll stay small. Invisible. Nobody can connect with you.”
And just like that, something in me cracked.
Because the truth was. .. I didn’t know.
