If You Don’t Set the Standard, Clients Will
I once heard a high-ranking real estate leader say something that stuck with me.
She and her husband had sold more real estate than almost anyone else in the state in 2025. Something like 98 percent more than the average agent.
During her keynote she said something simple but powerful.
If you don’t share a stat, the industry defines you as average.
That idea applies to business in more places than we realize.
If you don’t define the standard, people assume the default.
And in business, the default is usually unlimited access.
Unlimited revisions.
Unlimited messages.
Unlimited availability.
Not because people are trying to be difficult. But because you haven’t taught them what the expectations are.
Like it or not, we teach people how to treat us.
For years I told kids to treat people the way they wanted to be treated. But as an adult in business I learned something slightly different.
You also have to teach people what your standard is.
If you don’t communicate it, clients will fill in the blanks themselves.
And when that happens, scope creep starts.
Requests get bigger.
Expectations get fuzzier.
And suddenly the business you built for freedom starts feeling heavy.
One of the first coaches I ever worked with taught something that will forever stick with me. She said three things will make or break your business.
Communication.
Expectations.
Boundaries.
When those three things are clear, everything gets easier.
Clients understand how you work.
The experience becomes smoother.
And respect naturally increases.
Ironically, strong boundaries don’t scare away good clients.
They reassure them.
Because boundaries signal professionalism.
They signal clarity.
They signal leadership.
And those are exactly the qualities people are looking for when they hire someone.
So here’s something to think about.
If you haven’t clearly defined your standard, what assumptions are your clients making about you right now?
