The Part of My Story I Almost Kept Hidden: How My Business Would Look Different If I Had
There was a part of me I almost never showed. A part I was too afraid, too embarrassed, too “small” to share. And for years, that part was holding my business hostage.
The Question That Broke Me Open
The first coach I ever had asked me one question that I still think about:
“Who is Kelly?”
I laughed nervously. “Well… I’m a teacher. I’m a mom. I’m in theater. I do Scouts.”
She looked at me like I was missing the point.
“All of those things describe you, but they don’t tell me who you are. If you don’t let people in, you’ll stay small. Invisible. Nobody can connect with you.”
And in that moment, I realized something terrifying: I didn’t even know who Kelly was anymore. I had spent years being the person that the world needed me to be, and letting myself vanish. Work Kelly. Mom Kelly. Theater Kelly. Scout Mom Kelly. But the real Kelly? I had hidden her away.
The Spiral
That question sent me spiraling. For two and a half years, I asked myself over and over: Who am I, really? Not the roles I played, not the versions of me that everyone else needed, but the part that was actually me.
I unearthed trauma. Lost autonomy. Choices I wasn’t proud of … things I did because it was “easier” than standing up for myself. I had played small. I had let my children shine while I quietly disappeared.
And then my mom died. She had been the hairpin holding everything together. Losing her was like the floor dropping out from under me. Suddenly, the support I had relied on vanished, and I had to face something I’d avoided my whole life: the people I had allowed into my space because it was easy… weren’t healthy. They were controlling, manipulative, draining. And I had let it slide because I didn’t want conflict.
I was terrified. I was grieving. I was overwhelmed. And yet, in that chaos, something clicked.
How I Found Kelly (and My Business)
I started writing. I started sharing my story. I started my email list. I repurposed those emails into a book. I created a story-first business model built on stories as strategy, mirror, and mic.
I started showing up … really showing up … online. Weekly emails. A book. A podcast. Simplified offers. And slowly, the right people started finding me. People who resonated with my story. People who valued my approach. People I could serve without pretending to be someone else.
Why This Matters
If I had kept hiding Kelly, my business would still be small. Invisible. Stuck.
Being brave, messy, real, and vulnerable isn’t optional. It’s the difference between staying stuck and stepping into a business — and a life — that actually feels like yours.
Your Turn
Your story matters. Every scar, every mistake, every awkward, messy, real piece of you is your strategy. It’s how you connect with the clients you’re meant to serve. It’s how your business grows without forcing, without hustling harder, without pretending to be someone else.
Question for You:
What part of your story are you hiding — and what could happen if you finally let it be seen?
